Professional Valuers Association

THE PROFESSIONAL VALUERS ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA

How do you become a valuer

The registration of professional valuers is controlled by the SA Council for the Property Valuers Profession (SACPVP) - the government authority tasked with the certification of valuers in South Africa.

In order to be considered for registration, the tertiary and other qualifying criteria as laid down in the Act, must be satisfied. These are as follows:

  • A recognised academic qualification (typically a Bcom degree, majoring in property economics and valuation sciences),
  • Two years internship under the mentorship of a registered valuer,
  • Sufficient experience in property valuation to the satisfaction of the SACPVP.

The SACPVP may also at its discretion, register a person in a particular category of property valuation, if it deems that such a person lacks the neccessary experience, in other fields, or applies for registration in a specialised field only. In many instances valuers choose to specialise in a particular property category; say mining, agricultural, residential, commercial, etc.

Note:

Some persons holding the title "Appointed Appraiser" alone, purport to be registered professional valuers. They are not. This title is an old administrative title issued by the jurisdiction court in terms of the Administration of Estates Act of 1965. This was for the assessment of property for the administration of estates duty only, prior to the legislative certification of professional property valuers. And even then, it did not confer authority to value property for any other purpose whatsoever.
This designation is not valid in terms of the new act, and any person not registered under the SACPVP in terms of current legislation, is acting fraudulently.
